Since the Housing Act 1996, Tenancy Agreements are often by default Assured Shorthold Tenancies (AST's) which can give the landlord the right to possession after just 6 months, with only 2 months notice.  Consequently tenants are increasingly forced from their rented homes after short tenures, as private landlords chase quick profits. Furthermore, up to 1 in 50 tenants lose their homes due to repossession for defaulted mortgage payments by their landlord.  Of course, many landlords may only be renting their properties short term anyway, maybe over an extended holiday or sabatical.
